Lesson 59 - Sleeping Habits John: According to this article, adults are recommended 8 hours or more of sleep a night. Kathy: Eight hours or more? Isn’t that excessive? I get by on about six to seven hours, and I have plenty of energy to go around. John: I don’t know about you but if I don’t get my eight hours, I’m dragging all day and can hardly function. Kathy: You’re such a wimp. I’ll have to call you “Sleeping Beauty” from now on. John: You can make me the laughing-stock all you want but there’s something else you should know. Kathy: And what could that be? John: They say you’re more prone to gain weight if you don’t sleep enough. Kathy: Are you pulling my leg? You’re just saying that, aren’t you? John: No, I read it in the paper. You always want to lose weight and maybe this is one way to start. < Key expressions > ■ I get by on about six to seven hours, and I have plenty of energy to go around. ■ I’m dragging all day and can hardly function. ■ You can make me the laughing stock. ■ Are you pulling my leg? < Main dialogue > ■ Isn’t that excessive? * excessive = too much ■I get by on about six to seven hours, and I have plenty of energy to go around. * get by on something : ~로 그럭저럭 살아가다, ~로 충분하다 ■ I’m dragging all day and can hardly function. * can’t function – can’t do the things you normally do : 제대로 기능을 못하다 ex, I can’t function without a coffee in the morning. * dragging : 질질 끌다 ■ You’re such a wimp.
