Lesson 56 - Corporeal punishment Radio host: So are you for or against corporeal punishment in our school system? Caller: Personally, I feel strongly against it. I don’t believe that teachers have the right to take physical disciplinary action against students. Radio host: But many parents feel some sort of discipline is necessary. Caller: A form of discipline is essential but how much is too much when it comes to hitting students? Radio host: So you’re implying that certain teachers can abuse their power? Caller: That’s exactly my point. How can we determine when a teacher has gone overboard in class? Using the rod is just an easy way out. Radio host: Good point. So what do you think is an alternative to corporeal punishment? Caller: We should implement more after-school detention and force students to participate in community work. Radio host: Any final comments to make? Caller: Our utmost priority is to nurture our children and guide them in the proper direction. < Key expressions > ■ So are you for or against corporeal punishment in our school system? ■ How can we determine when a teacher has gone overboard in class? ■ Using the rod is just an easy way out. ■ We should implement more after-school detention and force students to participate in community work. < Main dialogue > ■ So are you for or against corporeal punishment in our school system? * corporeal punishment -> some kind of physical punishment : 체벌 cf. capital punishment : 사형(제도) * for or against = 찬성 혹은 반대 ■ I don’t believe that teachers have the right to take physical disciplinary action against students. * have the right to do something : ~할 권리가 있다 ■ How much is too much when it comes to hitting students? * How much is too much? -> What is the limit? ■ That’s exactly my point. = That’s what I’m trying to tell you. ■ How can we determine when a teacher has gone overboard in class? * to go overboard -> go beyond what they should have gone : 도를 지나치다, (범위, 한계 따위를) 넘다 ■ Using the rod is just an easy way out. * easy way out : 쉬운 해결책 ■ So what do you think is an alternative to corporeal punishment? * alternative : 대안책 ex. alternative medicine : 대체 의학 alternative music / club / comedy ■ We should implement more after-school detention and force students to participate in community work. * implement something = put it into action * after-school detention : (벌로) 방과 후에 학교에 남겨두기 ■ Any final comments to make? =Anything that you want to say to add your final comments? ■ Our utmost priority is to nurture our children and guide them in the proper direction. * utmost priority = the most important thing * nurture – carefully raise them / take care of them : 양육하다 |
