워싱턴 한인 세탁소, 바지 분실 소송사건 [07-06-15]

It should be a simple case of lost laundry.
“This is a case about one pair of pants.”
But unfortunately, for the Chung family, owners of Washington D.C.’s Custom Cleaners,
the pants they lost belonged to a lawyer,
this man, Roy Pearson, actually an administrative judge.
And he’s in court asking for $54 million
for these not so fancy pants.
“It’s laughable. It’s like a parody of the American system of justice.”

How does Pearson come up with such a number?
He won’t explain in public.
But his original court documents claim
he had to rent a car to drive to a less convenient drycleaners.
And he charges the Chung’s posted signs that guaranteed satisfaction and same day service.

And for everyday the signs were posted and he was not satisfied,
that’s 1,200 days,
he says they owe him $3,000 times three
because he names Mr. and Mrs. Chung and their oldest son as defendants
plus $500,000 in emotional damages
and $542,000 in legal fees
even though he’s representing himself.

“It’s outrageous and shameful
and it’s a waste of everyone’s time,
you know, to pursue this.”
In fact, in court time alone, D.C. taxpayers are paying approximately $2,600 a day for this trial.
And in time wasted, the D.C. courts are so busy
that a case file could take up to 2 years to reach trial.

On the witness stand, Pearson broke down in tears trying to describe how he was treated by the cleaners,
a family-run business that says they found the pants and offered him $12,000 to settle.
A frivolous case, perhaps,
but one that turned the American dream into a nightmare for this couple.
