And good evening. on a day when the nation poses to remember the people who died fighting our wars,
there is a development that has the potential to save American lives.
For the first time in nearly 30 years,
the US has held high-level talks with Iran.
A country that Bush administration once labeled a member of the axis of evil.

The meeting was an attempt to reduce the violence in Iraq.
The fact that the administration agreed to this meeting
is a sign perhaps of just how dire the situation in Iraq has become.
And so we begin tonight with ABC’s Terry McCarthy in Baghdad.

They shook hands. They talked.
After 27 years of sturdy avoidance, this was a breakthrough.
But today’s discussions at times were brutally frank,
according to an Iraqi official inside the room.
Ambassador Ryan Crocker laid out in detail
US charges that Iran is supplying sophisticated roadside bombs to Iraqi militias.
Ambassador Hassan Kazemi Qomi denied that.
He then surprised both the US and Iraq
by suggesting Iran could help train Iraqi security forces.

Today’s meeting, the Ambassador said,
is the first step towards ongoing talks.
Crocker said the US wanted action, not words.
With 2 US carrier groups in the Persian Gulf
and 160,000 US troops along its western border,
Iran is nervous.
For its part, the US now realizes the war can only be ended
by involving Iraq’s neighbors, particularly Syria and Iran.
