Vitamin D can save your life.

Recently, we've reported on several new studies showing the benefits of vitamin D. Now researchers have just released what could be the most compelling evidence yet about the so-called sunshine vitamin. In an eight-year study, adults with the low levels of vitamin D were 26 percent more likely to die than people with higher levels.

So our medical editor Dr. Tim Johnson joins us. Let me quote my own words. The most compelling evidence yet of the importance of vitamin D. What... what is it? Well, there are a whole string of studies now, Charlie, showing that people with lower levels of vitamin D are at increased risk for all kinds of diseases, including several cancers, diabetes, maybe even M.S., heart disease.

And this one shows that there is an increase in the overall chance of dying with the lowest levels of vitamin D. There are also now many studies showing that many Americans have deficient levels of vitamin D. Some studies suggest that as many as 40% of Americans are below optimal levels. So you put those two together, and there's a lot of worry about vitamin D levels in Americans.

Below optimal levels because we don't go out in the sun as much or we wear sunscreen or we don't drink as much milk, I gather. Both of those, uh, and... and I think the sun exposure is a real factor for many people. And so we’re starting... starting to see these deficient levels.  What we don't know for sure is whether or not if we give more vitamin D, it will get rid of all of these risks.

But we think so. And there are some studies now under way to prove that point. So people should be taking more vitamin D than just, uh, a regular one-a-day tablet? Well, that's... that... that’s a question that everybody asks me, and I'll answer by telling you what I do. Which is I take a daily multivitamin, which has 400 international units of the D-3 form. That’s the best form. And that’s the most common dosage in a standard vitamin.

And after doing some research and interviewing on the subject, I now take also an additional 1,000 international units every day. There’s no evidence that that level of dosing and supplement is dangerous and I think it's a good bet to hedge. All right, perfectly safe to do so. Dr. Tim Johnson, as always, thanks.
