Ghana - a dumping ground for e-waste
인쇄하기

Now have you ever wondered where your old computer ended up?  Ghana is one of many poor countries taking more and more electronic or e- waste - waste that is often filled with toxic lead and dioxins. The dumping of used electronic products is illegal, but campaigners say manufacturers in countries like the U.K need to do more.  Will Ross reports now from Ghana.

Fire and filth in the Ghanaian capital, Akra. Agbobloshy(?) may be a rubbish dump, but it’s also a treasure trove.  The thousands of discarded computers, many of them from Britain, are dissected for any reusable parts - lenses from the disk drives, circuit boards. And with global scrap prices soaring, metals are in high demand.  Any copper is especially prized.

Fire is used to remove the plastic coating from the computer’s copper wires and cables.  These workers are here seven days a week, inhaling the poisonous fumes. Computer screen casings even provide a bridge across this toxic bog.  A pair of second-hand moon boots, which once graced the European ski resorts, provides good protection for 15 year old Abraham.  He says his headmaster sent him away because he hadn’t paid the school fees.

But rummaging here to raise the money is hazardous work.  And campaigners say this poisoning of the poor must be stopped.  "Chemicals like lead are very dangerous especially for children.  And they affect the brain when it’s developing and therefore causes a lower IQ when they grow up."

Well, until recently China and India were the main countries for the dumping of this so-called e-waste. But right now the piles of computers are growing by the week right here in Ghana.  And this is despite the fact that there are international laws banning the exports of unusable electronic equipment. It all arrives in bulk at Ghana’s main port in Tema. Some of the computers do work, but most are dumped and are polluting Ghana.

In a disposable age of frequent computer upgrades this poisonous supply is in no danger of drying up.  But the next time you throw out an old PC, you might want to find out if it’s headed for a landfill site or to a rubbish tip right here in Ghana. Will Ross, BBC News, Akra.
