It happened during the afternoon rush hour.
A powerful tornado touched down in western Oklahoma City,
damaging dozens of homes,
tossing cars across the highway
and overturning this truck.
For much of the plains, it was a second day
and night of dangerous weather.

Strong thunderstorms produced lightning, hail,
and in some areas, flooding rains.
The severe weather, part of the same storm system
that brought blizzard conditions to the Rockies.
“Large tornado on the ground.”
And spawned 65 tornados Wednesday night
from as far north as Nebraska to Oklahoma and Texas.
“Now, that is a violent tornado.
That’s gonna be about a eighth of a quarter of a mile wide.”

At least four people died in those tornadoes.
One in the Texas panhandle.
In northern Oklahoma, a man and woman were killed
when a tornado destroyed their home.
And a young mother died in Holly, Colorado
after she and her children were picked up by a tornado and thrown into a tree.
More than half a dozen others were injured there.
At least 60 homes damaged.

“It’s just devastating.
Trees and roofs and houses.”
Today, residents in this Oklahoma City neighborhood will begin cleaning up
as the system that spawned these dangerous tornadoes marches slowly east.

토네이도가 처음 발생한 건 오후 혼잡시간대였습니다. 강력한 토네이도가 오클라호마시 서부에 상륙해 수십 가구가 피해를 입고 고속도로에서는 차들이 날아갔으며 트럭이 전복되었습니다. 대부분의 중부 대평원 지대에서는 이틀째 위험한 날씨가 계속되었습니다.

강력한 뇌우로 번개가 발생하고 우박이 내렸으며, 일부 지역에서는 폭우로 홍수가 발생하기도 했습니다. 이번 심각한 날씨는 로키산맥 일대에 심한 눈보라(블리자드)를 가져왔던 태풍전선의 영향으로 발생하고 있습니다. "저기 거대한 토네이도가 있습니다!" 네브라스카로부터 오클라호마, 텍사스에 이르는 지역에는 태풍전선의 영향으로 수요일 저녁에 토네이도가 65개나 발생하기도 했습니다. "아주 파괴적인 토네이도입니다. 폭이 한 1/32마일(=50m)은 될 것 같은데요."

이번 토네이도로 최소 네 명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 텍사스 팬핸들 지역에서는 한 명이 목숨을 잃었고, 오클라호마 북부에서는 토네이도로 주택이 파괴되면서 남자 한 명과 여자 한 명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 콜로라도 홀리에서는 한 젊은 여성이 아이들과 함께 토네이도에 휩쓸려 나무에 던져지는 사고가 발생했고, 이로 인해 여성이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 부상자가 여섯 명을 넘었으며, 최소 60채의 가옥이 피해를 입었습니다.

"정말 파괴적인 토네이도였습니다. 나무, 지붕, 주택 등이 모두 피해를 입었습니다. 오늘 위험한 토네이도를 가져온 태풍전선이 서서히 동쪽으로 이동하고 있는 가운데 오클라호마시 인근지역 주민들은 토네이도가 남기고 간 피해를 정리하는 작업을 시작할 예정입니다
