Meet Tiger Woods. Not the golfer, obviously,
but a pretty impressive cat in his own right.
“He’s huge. He is huge. And he’s only two.”
This Tiger Woods and his famously named pals Madonna and Cathay
are all south china tigers,
the most endangered species of big cats in the world today.

Li Quan is breaking all the rules of conservation
to try to save their dying breed.
“If we don’t do anything drastic,
they may go extinct forever.”

Li’s drastic plan is to take these zoo raised animals from Asia
and put them in an environment in Africa
where they can learn to be wild again.
When Li saw the poor conditions in which these tigers were living in China five years ago,
she devoted herself fulltime to the cause
and launched an ambitious dream to save this Asian tiger
in South Africa where no tigers exist in the wild.

Moving wild animals is always a risky business,
especially when you bring them half way across the world.
But this project has attracted particularly strong criticism
from some cat experts
who say there are too few south china tigers left
and too many risks to be gambling with the future of an entire species.

The tiger’s chief handler Peter Openshaw
had his doubts at first,
but now believes the open spaces and wildlife expertise in South Africa
can save these Asian tigers.
Openshaw initially had to hunt for (강의 화면에서 'four of'를 'for'로 바꿔주세요) them.
After spending their lives in a zoo,
these tigers had never even eaten wild meat.
And both the dead animal was a toy.

Now, when Openshaw drops a carcass in a field,
and blows his whistle,
within seconds, the tigers rush across the grasslands ready to pounce.
After three years, Tiger Woods and the others are successfully able to hunt for themselves.
Getting to the Chinese wild via South Africa maybe a roundabout way,
but to Li Quan, it’s better than no way at all.

동물의 서식지를 옮기는 것은 매우 위험한 일입니다. 특히나 그것이 지구 정반대편으로 옮기는 것이라면 더욱 말할 것도 없죠. 하지만 이 프로젝트는 고양이과 동물 전문가들로부터 특히 많은 비판을 받았습니다. 전문가들의 주장은 바로 한 동물종의 미래를 걸고 도박을 하기에는 현재 남아 있는 남중국 호랑이의 개체수가 너무 적고 위험하다는 것이었습니다.

그러나 이제 오픈셔씨가 죽은 동물을 초원에 내려놓고 호각을 불면 몇 초 지나지 않아 호랑이가 먹이를 찾아 뛰어 옵니다. 3년이 지난 지금, 타이거 우즈를 비롯한 남중국 호랑이들은 스스로 사냥을 하며 살아갈 수 있습니다. 남아프리카를 통해 중국의 야생환경으로 돌아간다는 것은 크게 돌아가는 길일지도 모릅니다. 하지만 리 콴에게 있어 그것은 아무 방법도 없는 것보다 훨씬 나은 것입니다. 남아프리카 밸리 리저브에서 CBS 뉴스 라라 로건입니다.
