Good evening. Last summer, it was what everybody was talking about. Gas prices.
And the talk is starting again.
Again, you can see the prices going up almost daily.
Today, the government said the price of an average gallon of regular
went up five cents just in the last week
to $2.56 a gallon. That’s up $.39 a gallon since late January.
And summer, when demand typically peaks, is still a long ways off.
ABC’s Dean Reynolds joins me now from Chicago. Dean?

Good evening, Charlie. Well, one analyst we talked to today said Americans are just getting used to higher gasoline prices and that despite them,
demand this summer is expected to be astronomical.
The lowest price for a gallon of regular gasoline in this country?
$2.22 in Alaska.
Everywhere else it’s more.
Almost a buck more in San Francisco.
“$60. That’s ridiculous.”

The current price spike is felt in every region of the country,
but especially on the west coast
where it’s up $.44 from a year ago.
Indeed just 6 weeks ago, the national average was $2.16 a gallon.
In Atlanta, the current pump price of $2.44 is food for thought.

It’s not entirely unexpected.
A graph of the last 2 years shows price peaks in concert with the annual switch from winter grade to summer grade fuel.
A change that is taking place earlier than usual this year.
That and unforeseen problems at refineries and pipelines
together with record demand for gasoline in January and February have combined
to push prices higher. And higher.

In Chicago where the pump prices now north of $2.50 a gallon, adjustment are underway.
“I have to do it no matter what.
So other things suffer. But the car doesn’t.”

찰스 깁슨 아나운서의 ABC 월드 뉴스입니다. 안녕하십니까? 지난 여름 모든 사람들이 고유가에 대해 얘기했던 것을 기억하실 겁니다. 올해에도 그 얘기가 또 반복될 조짐을 보이고 있습니다. 기름값이 요즘 또다시 거의 매일 오르고 있습니다. 오늘 있었던 정부 발표에 따르면, 지난 한 주 동안에만 일반유 가격이 5센트 올라 갤런당 2.56달러를 기록하고 있다고 합니다. 1월보다 39센트 오른 가격이죠. 하지만 일반적으로 석유수요가 급증하는 여름은 아직도 한참 남아 있습니다. ABC 딘 레이놀즈 기자가 시카고에서 보도합니다.

안녕하십니까? 오늘 저희가 인터뷰한 한 시장분석가는 미국인들이 고유가에 익숙해지고 있으며, 그 비싼 가격에도 불구하고 올 여름의 석유수요는 천문학적인 수준일 것이라고 말했습니다. 일반유 국내 최저가는 얼마일까요? 정답은 갤런당 2.22달러로 이것은 알래스카 가격입니다. 다른 모든 곳에서는 이보다 더 비쌉니다. 샌프란시스코의 경우 거의 1달러 정도 더 비싸죠. “60달러라... 정말 말도 안 되는군.”

현재 나타나고 있는 유가인상은 전국적인 현상이며, 특히 서부해안지대의 경우 1년 전보다 44센트 가량 올랐습니다. 사실 6주 전만 하더라도 전국 평균은 갤런당 2.16달러였습니다. 아틀랜타의 2.44달러라는 높은 가격은 분명 생각해 볼 문제입니다.

하지만 이러한 현상이 전혀 예상되지 않았던 것은 아닙니다. 지난 2년간의 유가를 표시한 그래프를 살펴보면 겨울용 석유에서 여름용 석유로 전환되는 시점에 유가가 상승한다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다. 다만 올해는 평년보다 그 변화가 조금 일찍 일어나고 있을 뿐이죠. 이와 더불어 석유 정제시설 및 파이프라인에서 발생하는 예기치 않은 문제와 1,2월의 기록적인 수요가 겹치면서 유가는 점점 높아져만 가고 있습니다.

주유소에서의 유가가 갤런당 2.50달러인 시카고의 경우 현재 약간의 조정이 이루어지고 있습니다. “가격이 얼마나 비싸든지 살 수밖에 없죠. 고유가 때문에 다른 것들에는 문제가 생기지만, 차에는 아무 변화도 없습니다.”

- “Americans are just getting used to higher gasoline prices”에서 just는 문장에 ‘단지 ~하고 있을 뿐이다’라는 의미를 더해주고 있다. 그 다음에 나오는 that은 that 이하의 내용이 said에 걸리고 있다는 사실을 나타내기 위해 사용된 것이다. (One analyst said that ... and that ... 의 문장구조에서 첫 번째 that은 생략해도 이해에 큰 지장이 없지만 두 번째 that은 생략할 경우 그 내용이 said에 걸리는 것인지 아니면 앞과는 다른 새로운 문장인지 명확하지 않을 수 있다. 따라서 구어체에서는 기자의 억양과 같이 두 번째 that에 강세를 두어 앞의 said에 걸리고 있다는 사실을 강조하며, 문어체에서는 병렬구조를 나타내기 위해 두 that을 모두 생략하지 않는다.) despite them의 them은 higher gasoline prices를 가리키고 있다.
