Autobiography                  자서전

In my childhood trees were green     어린시절 나무들은 푸르고
And there was plenty to be seen.     보여지는 것이 많았습니다.
Come back early or never come.      일찍오던지 영원히 오지마라
My father made the walls resound     아버지는 각방마다 소리나게 하고
He wore his collar the wrong way round.옷을 뒤집어 입었습니다.
Come back early or never come.
My mother wore a yellow dress;  엄마는 노란 드레스를 입고
Gently, gently gentleness.      조용히 조용히 조용함

Come back early or never come.
When I was five the black dreams came 내가 다섯살때 검은꿈이 왔습니다.
Nothing after was quite the same.      후에 전혀 같은것은 아무것도 없습니다.
Come back early or never come.
The dark was talking to the dead    어둠은 죽음에게 말합니다
The lamp was dark beside my bed.  내침상 옆에 램프는 어둡습니다.
Come back early or never come.
When I woke they did not care   내가 잠에서 깨었을때 그들은 돌보지 않습니다.
Nobody, nobody was there.      아무도 아무도 거기에 없습니다.
Come back early or never come.
When my silent terror cried,    나의 조용한 두려움이 울때
Nobody, nobody replied.         아무도 아무도 대답하지 않습니다.
Come back early or never come.
I got up; the chilly sun  나는 일어났습니다. 차가운 태양이
Saw me walk away alone.  혼자 외로이 걷는 나를 봅니다.
Come back early or never come.

작가는 행복을 방마다 시끄러운 소리가 나는 것,

아빠의 옷입을때 실수, 엄마의 색깔있는 옷 등으로 표현했으며

5살때 엄마가 돌아가시고

그 이후의 삶을 외로움, 조용함, 차가움등으로 대조적으로 그립니다.

각 연마다 후렴구로 등장한 '일찍 오던지 영원히 오지 말라'라는 표현은

힘든일은 얼른 지나가던지 영원히 오지 말라는

소망을 표현한 것 같습니다.
