British Bulldog to Get Makeover
인쇄하기

Now, it’s the classic symbol of Britain. The bulldog is defiant, pugnacious, and belligerent, but now a shake- up of dog breeding standards means all that could disappear. Out goes the Churchillian jowl and in comes a new leaner look, as John Kay has been finding out with breeders in Wilshire. John.

Yeah, George, this is Dodge, and Dodge is not the kind of bulldog that the Kennel Club wants to see any more. They’ve decided to change the rules after concerns about the health of this breed. And you know, they say dogs grow to look like their owners. Well, Dodge’s face pretty much sums up how his owners are feeling about this tonight.

He’s the dog who refuses to roll over: defiant, determined, and famously British, but he’s about to change. The Kennel Club says the breed must go from this to this: leaner, longer, and less jowly. For these dedicated bulldog breeders near Bath, it’s a very sad day. They love Finney, Dodge, and Lily just the way they are and don’t want the breed to change.

“Absolutely devastated, to the point of tears. It’s-it-it would be the worst thing imaginable to the genuine bulldog lover, exhibitor, and breeder.” The Kennel Club decided to change the bulldog and scores of other breeds following this BBC documentary. It claimed that some dogs were being bred for their looks, rather than for their own health. It claimed bulldogs shouldn’t naturally look like this and can suffer breathing and birth problems because of their size.

“We want to see a bulldog that doesn’t have such a large head, that is a little taller on its legs, that is-is less exaggerated in all its forms, less skin wrinkling and so on.” Breeders say the Kennel Club’s decision is a knee jerk reaction. Butch here is 13 and has only needed medical treatment three times in his life. “They run, they walk, they play, you know, they sleep, and they breathe exactly the same as any other dog, and you know, there’s no reason to change the shape to deal with any health issues.”

Of course just because the Kennel Club is changing its breeding rules doesn’t mean the bulldog will completely disappear. In fact fans think it might even make this indomitable dog even more appealing. There are plans to campaign to fight to save the traditional British bulldog, which as you can see has cheered up Dodge enormously. Look at that lovely smile. George. Thank you, John.
