A Hybrid with Great Gas Mileage

Finally tonight, the New York Auto Show opens tomorrow and it may be somewhat a gloomy affair because prospects for car sales in the near future are not particularly bright. But those who visit might think ahead a few years, think about what they’ll be driving down the road, if you will. ABC’s Ned Potter got a chance to test-drive a car that gets amazing gas mileage.

Start your car today, and you may get 20 miles a gallon. But what if you could get 60, or 100, or more? “Conceivably, they could run on electric mode day in, day out.” To see if that’s possible, we’re getting a private test drive of the Ford Escape. Turn the key - and there isn’t a sound. This is a prototype of a Plug-in Hybrid.

“You’ve already saved three cents on this trip.” That’s Chief Engineer Greg Frenette. He says you may be able to go 30 miles without using a drop of gas. “Right now, you’re using cheap electricity to propel the vehicle.” Automakers have already been selling hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius or the Escape with gasoline engines plus electric motors to help out.

But now, they’re putting new powerful batteries in back which you charge overnight. “About the only thing on the outside that’s pretty much different is this electric plug. And the cord that fits in it is the same as an extension cord that you may already have in your basement or your garage.”

Drive around the Detroit suburbs, and the gas engine only comes on when you floor the pedal. “You’ve been up around 80-90 miles per gallon.” So the cost of a trip could be a third of what it is today, since electricity costs about three cents a mile, and gas is about ten. The sticker price of the car would be higher, but engineers say it might pay for itself in three or four years.

There were times, of course, when I was only using electric, so in… in effect, I was getting infinite miles per gallon because I wasn’t using any gallons at all.” “Right.” Will they sell? The auto companies still sell gas guzzlers. But with gas prices rising, a car like this may go far. Net Potter, ABC News, Dearborn, Michigan.
