Finally tonight, we take a spin in the time machine with our partners at Time Magazine. In the latest issue, they take a look at fascinating changes that could affect all of us fairly soon. Some of the most amazing innovations hit close to home. Here’s Dan Harris with a day in the life of our future.
Yes, in the future, your day will probably start just as it does now - in the bathroom. Only it will be a bathroom where the toilet tests your urine, your sugar levels, and your blood pressure, and then uploads that information to your doctor. You may also find yourself using products like this soap which contains sunscreen which will stick to your skin as you wash it.
“We’re not headed into a future that looks like the stage set from ‘The Jetsons,’ but the functions will be dramatically different and much more capable.” Then you’ll make breakfast in a kitchen like this where the web-enabled refrigerator tells you what’s inside. (“Miso has been added.”) And the counter projectsrecipe suggestions based on the ingredients you place on it. “Recipe two.”
Tiny, inexpensive computer chips will be attached to every product you buy. “You’re basically turning all those inanimate objects in your home into ‘smartifacts’ - intelligent artifacts with some rudimentary capability of accounting for themselves.” For example, a grocery cart will read the items you put in it, and will also use GPS to help direct you to the items that are on your shopping list.
And how will you drive to the supermarket? Quite possibly, in a driverless, robotic car. Wait. What? “Futurists say robots will be a huge part of our lives, and it’s already starting to happen. Check out this uh…toy dinosaur by the name of “Pleo” which actually purrs when you pet it. It will also sniff your hand and growls at you when you try to take away its food.” So that robotic car will use GPS to navigate roads and lasers to sense how close you are to other cars, which will make your commute easier and safer.
And finally, when you come home in the evening, a robot may well have taken care of basic tasks such as loading the dishwasher. But futurists say technology will not change the human condition. At the end of your day, you will still share a drink with a friend, or hug your child. No robot can do that. Dan Harris, ABC News, New York.
