Lesson 34 Getting the Tickets From the Scalper Kathy: Look at the line of people who’re waiting for tickets. We don’t have a snowball chance in hell of getting in! John: You’ve got nothing to fret over. I’ve already got the tickets. Kathy: You did?! How did you manage that? John: I got them from one of the scalpers in front of the theater. Kathy: You sly thing. That option never crossed my mind! You’re brilliant! John: Tell me something I don’t know. Kathy: Oh, boy. But you must have forked out a fortune! What was the damage? John: Not important. I took care of it. I got the best seats in the house. Kathy: I really owe you a big one for this. I can’t thank you enough! John: You can pick up the tab next time. Kathy: You bet. < Key expressions > ■ We don’t have a snowball chance in hell of getting in! ■ But you must have forked out a fortune! ■ What was the damage? ■ You can pick up the tab next time. < Main dialogue > ■ We don’t have a snowball chance in hell of getting in! * not have a snowball chance in hell -> We have no possibility (of getting in.) / There is no chance. * a queue (英) : (순서를 기다리는) 줄, 열 ex. a bus queue (버스를 기다리는) 줄 ■ You’ve got nothing to fret over. ■ How did you manage that? -> How did you get the ticket? ■ I got them from one of the scalpers in front of the theater. * (美) a scalper : 암표상 -> (英) a ticket tout ■ You sly thing. * someone is sly -> very clever / devious ■ But you must have forked out a fortune! * fork money out for something -> have to spend money on something that you don’t really want to spend that much money on : (마지못해) ~에 돈을 지불하다 ■ What was the damage? -> How much did you have to pay? / How much will it set me back? ■ I really owe you a big one for this. * owe someone something : ~을 (~에게) 신세지고 있다 ■ You can pick up the tab next time. * a tab = a bill * pick up the tab -> pay the bill |
