A bright spot of economic news today that’s been years in the making.
The government says the percentage of Americans living in poverty
dropped last year to 12.3%.
A drop of three tenths of a percent from the year before.
A total of 36.5 million Americans were living below the poverty line in 2006.
It’s the first significant decline this decade.
Here’s ABC’s Barbra Pinto.

The reason for today’s good news is, in a word, jobs.
“It’s true that a strong economy is the best anti-poverty program that exists.”
Unemployment is falling.
In the past four years, the country has added nearly seven million jobs.
And in those four years, the average household income has risen about $700.

Another bright spot?
More single mothers, once the bulk of the nation’s poor, are finding work
largely due to welfare reform.
East coast states such as Maryland, New Hampshire and Connecticut has the lowest poverty rates and are making strides.
Among the highest in the nation,
Mississippi, New Mexico and the District of Columbia.

“Now we have an economy where most of the economic growth is concentrated
among people who have high incomes
and there’s very little that trickles down to those at the bottom.”
Obviously, some of that growth is tricking down.
In addition, the recent hike in the minimum wage was not factored into the numbers released today.
And economists say that could make those poverty figures look even better in the future. Kate?

몇 년만에 반가운 경제 뉴스가 들어와 있습니다. 가난 속에 살고 있는 미국인의 비율이 지난 해에 12.3%로 감소했다고 정부가 밝혔습니다. 이것은 전년 대비 0.3% 하락한 수치로, 2006년 현재 빈곤선 이하의 생활을 하고 있는 시민의 수는 3650만 명입니다. 이것은 최근 10년간의 변화 중 가장 크게 떨어진 것입니다. ABC 바바라 핀토 기자가 보도합니다.

- the bulk of the nation's poor는 앞의 single moms에 대한 동격인데, 여기에 once가 추가되었으므로 '한때 ~이었던‘을 뜻하게 된다. largely는 due to를 수식하는 것으로 혼자 아이를 키우는 여성들이 일자리를 찾게 되는 것이 ‘주로’ 무엇 때문인지를 나타낸다. largely의 위치가 바뀌어 due largely to something의 형태로 쓰이기도 한다.

Now we have an economy where most of the economic growth is concentrated among people who have high incomes and there’s very little that trickles down to those at the bottom.
- ‘~한 사람들’을 나타낼 때에는 those who ... 를 사용하는데, who 이하에 진행형, 수동형이 오거나 위와 같이 전치사를 이용한 표현이 올 때에는 ‘who + be동사’가 생략된다. 따라서 those at the bottom은 those who are at the bottom을 간단히 표현한 것이다.
