In Peru today, powerful aftershocks from the earthquake.
The death toll has climbed now to at least 510.
1,500 are injured.
And the few hospitals in Peru’s southern desert region are completely overwhelmed.
Here’s ABC’s David Muer in Peru.

We made our way through streets lined with rubble
just as hundreds of the injured have
to find the only hospital in Chicha.
Inside the gate, head doctor Rita del Rio has shown a list of hand written names,
the patients who died, many of them on their way here.

In the emergency room, doctors face a pain-staking decision,
rows of patients lying in beds,
who among them get to go to Lima for better care.
They can only send eight at once.
An American doctor is among the volunteers who must now decide.

Not only are the doctors here dealing with no power and no water,
they’re also dealing with a shortage of medicine.
That’s because right behind me was the pharmacy
collapsed during the earthquake.
Inside, a grandmother sobs as she holds her 8-month-old granddaughter.
Doctors take x-rays and soon we can see the baby’s leg is broken.

하늘의 눈. ABC 뉴스 기자가 전설적인 정찰기를 타고 우주공간 바로 근처까지 여행을 떠났습니다. 이 노후화된 정찰기의 중요성이 그 어느 때보다도 높아지고 있습니다. ABC 금주의 인물. 십대의 언어를 풀어 수백만 명의 사람들을 춤추게 한 한 베이비붐 세대를 소개합니다. ABC 뉴스 본사에서 전해드리는 찰스 깁슨 아나운서 진행의 월드 뉴스입니다.

지진이 발생했던 페루에서는 오늘 또 다시 강력한 여진이 이어졌습니다. 최소 510명이 사망한 것으로 보이며, 부상자 수도 1500명에 달하고 있습니다. 페루 남부 사막지대에 위치한 몇 안 되는 병원에는 현재 많은 수의 환자가 몰려들고 있다고 합니다. ABC 데이빗 뮤어 기자가 페루에서 보도합니다.

수백 명의 부상자들이 그랬던 것처럼 취재팀 역시 건물 잔해로 즐비한 거리를 지나 치차의 유일한 병원에 도착했습니다. 병원 정문을 들어서자 정신과 의사인 리타 델 리오씨가 직접 손으로 쓴 사람들의 명단을 보여줍니다. 이들 중 대부분은 병원으로 이송되는 도중에 사망한 환자들입니다.

응급실에서 의사들은 힘든 결정을 내려야만 합니다. 많은 환자들이 침상에 누워 있지만, 이들 중 일부만이 리마로 옮겨져 더 좋은 치료를 받을 수 있기 때문입니다. 이곳 치차의 병원에서는 한 번에 여덟 명만 리마로 보낼 수 있습니다. 이 미국인 의사 역시 그러한 결정을 내려야 하는 자원봉사자 중 한 명입니다.

의사들이 견뎌야 하는 문제가 전기와 물이 없는 상황만은 아닙니다. 약도 부족하죠. 이 바로 뒤에 위치한 약국이 지진으로 무너져 내렸기 때문입니다. 병원 안에서 한 할머니가 8개월 된 손녀를 부둥켜 안고 흐느껴 웁니다. 의사들이 X선 사진을 찍어 보자 이 아이의 다리가 부러졌다는 것이 바로 나타납니다. 페루 치차에서 ABC 뉴스 데이빗 뮤어입니다.

- journey는 여기서 '여행하다'를 뜻하는 동사로, journey to A 의 구조로 쓰인다. the edge of space는 '우주의 가장자리'이므로 지구의 대기권과 우주가 접하는 지역을 뜻한다. 뒷부분의 an aging ~ than ever는 앞의 a legendary spy plane를 수식하는 동격구이다.

- make one's way는 '~로 가다'를 뜻하는 어구로 보통 make one's way to A (A에 가다), make one's way through A (A를 통해 가다) 등의 구문으로 쓰인다. just as ~ have에서 have는 have made their way through streets lined with rubble를 줄여 간단히 표현한 것이고, to find the only hospital in Chicha는 앞의 동사 made의 목적을 나타내는 부사구이다.
