And on thin ice. A new march of the penguins.
This time, to the endangered species list.
From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson.

Never mind that the penguins are incredibly cute
or that Happy Feet is the best selling DVD of the last year
or that two years ago March of the Penguins won an Academy Award for best documentary.
An environmental group called the Center for Biological Diversity
wants to use them to make a point.
“If we can save the penguins,
then perhaps we’ve chosen a path that will save ourselves as well.”

The group says penguins are dying out
in large part because their food supply is reduced by warming oceans.
Never mind that they only live in the icy waters near the South Pole,
if the group can get them protected by the US Endangered Species Act,
they say it’ll send an important message about the global problem of climate change.
“Penguins are both a symbol and a casualty of a much wider problem that we have with global warming
and that we really must address immediately.”

Now the group fully grants that getting the penguins protected would not change a lot on a practical level.
The only place that you’ll find penguins in any numbers
are places like a zoo such as this one in New York.
Rob Gramsey and his colleagues were feeding them this afternoon
while little kids pressed their noses to the window.
“Penguins are among, I’d say, our most popular animals next to the polar bears and the sea lions.”

The activists hope to leverage the penguin’s popularity.
People care about those funny overdressed birds.
And getting them protected would not only be good for them,
but for the rest of the world, too.
