While it might stand to reason,
the experts say it’s as important as ever to point out the person performing the surgery
is an extremely important factor in determining the medical outcome.
The story from our chief science correspondent Robert Bazell.

Today’s study looked at the outcome
of more than 7,700 prostate cancer operations.
If the surgeon had performed ten or fewer of the operations,
the cancer returned within five years in 17.9% of the cases.
If the surgeon had performed more than 250 cases,
the rate of recurrence dropped to 10.7%.

Dr. Peter Scardina, one of the study’s authors,
says the effects of experience are as significant as powerful medications.
“You give a patient a drug to reduce the recurrence rate
and a huge success would be if you dropped the recurrence rate from 17%-10%.
So the effect of a good experienced surgeon can be as powerful as the billion dollar a year drug.”

Patients can find the most experienced surgeon in a number of ways.
There’s lots of information about doctors available on websites,
public sites run by states and Medicare,
and private efforts like healthgrades.com
where Dr. Samantha Collier is the chief medical officer.
“What you want to find out is, first of all, is your doc in good standing?
Where’d he go to medical school, residency training?
Are they board certified in their specialty?”

“I notice that…that your PSA looks very good.”
Armed with that information, Dr. Collier says,
patients should make appointments with surgeons in their health plan
and ask how many procedures they’ve done
and what the complication rate is.
If a doctor refuses to answer those kinds of questions, experts say,

Armed with that information, Dr. Collier says, patients should make appointments with surgeons in their health plan and ask how many procedures they’ve done and what the complication rate is.
