살벌한 개싸움 현장 [07-07-27]

In another crime story, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three others
will be arraigned in federal court next week
for allegedly running a dog fight operation
that included hanging, drowning, and even electrocuting their animals.
Dog fighting is growing in popularity as Bill Whitaker reports.
And we should warn you, some may find these pictures disturbing.

The indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has turned the spotlight
on the seamy disturbing, yet fast-growing underworld of dog fighting.
Once hidden in the rural south,
this blood sport with pit bulls and gambling
now can be found in every state,
attracting urban professionals, gang-bangers, even teenagers,
40,000 fans by some estimates.

“A lot of people get involved because of the money.
A lot of people are into it for the entertainment.”
Though illegal in every state and a felony in 48,
there's a surge in dog fighting,
organized professional or amateur backyard bouts
with bets of a few dollars to thousands.
A champion dog can cost as much as $30,000,
but earn as much as $100,000 in winnings.
The winner lives to fight another day,
the loser often dies in the ring.

“They’ve got incredible stamina. They’ve got incredible power. They’ve got incredible speed.
The fights can last anywhere from ten minutes to three hours,
and the dogs typically die from blood loss or shock.”
Dog trainers insist the pit bulls aren't nasty by nature, the owners are.
Bullying and training the dogs to be hyper-aggressive,
eager to fight any place, any time, anyone.

Congress recently made it a federal crime
to transport fighting dogs across state lines,
which might end up pushing this vicious crime further underground.

"많은 사람들이 돈 때문에 개싸움을 찾습니다. 재미로 보는 사람들도 많죠." 개싸움은 모든 주에서 불법이고 48개 주에서는 중죄에 해당합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 개싸움은 크게 확산되어 몇 달러에서 수천 달러에 이르는 판돈이 걸리는 프로 및 아마추어 싸움판 형태로 조직되기에 이르렀습니다. 챔피언을 한 개는 무려 3만 달러나 합니다. 하지만 싸움에서 이겼을 경우 10만 달러를 벌 수 있죠. 싸움의 승자는 살아남아 다음 싸움을 준비하고 진 자는 보통 링 위에서 죽습니다.

"이 개들은 정말 놀라운 체력과 힘, 스피드를 가졌습니다. 개싸움은 10분에서 세 시간 가량 계속됩니다. 개들은 흔히 혈액 부족이나 쇼크로 죽곤 합니다." 개 조련사들은 험한 성격을 가진 것은 피트 불 종이 아니라 개 주인들이라고 말합니다. 이들은 개가 지나치게 공격적으로 되어 언제 어디서든 누구와도 싸울 수 있도록 괴롭히고 훈련시킵니다.

최근에 의회는 개싸움에 이용되는 개를 주(州) 경계를 넘어 운반하는 것을 연방죄로 하는 법을 만들었습니다. 하지만 이 때문에 개싸움이라는 끔찍한 범죄가 한층 더 지하로 숨어들 수도 있습니다. LA에서 CBS 뉴스 빌 위태커입니다.

- arraign은 ‘(법정에서) 죄의 진위여부를 묻다, 심문하다’를 뜻하는 동사로 흔히 be arraigned for something, be arraigned on charges of something 과 같이 수동태로 쓰인다. 위 문장에서는 will be arraigned와 for allegedly running a dog fight operation 사이에 부사구인 in federal court next week 가 들어가 있다. 심문의 이유에 해당하는 for 이하 부분에서 for running 이라 하지 않고 for allegedly running 이라고 한 것은 마이클 빅이 개싸움을 시켰다는 사실이 아직 확정되지 않았고 다만 그 죄가 의심되고 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 뉴스체 영어에서는 확정되지 않은 사실, 소문으로 떠도는 사실 등을 표현할 때에는 항상 allegedly, reportedly 등의 부사를 사용한다.
