Meanwhile, here in New York today, the dust finally settled after last night’s steam pipe explosion.
But what’s in that dust has health officials concerned.
The blast, just blocks from Grand Central terminal,
triggered some frightening memories and left behind a huge and potentially dangerous mess.
Bianca Solorzano has more.

The steam pipe explosion was strong enough to blow a 25-foot crater in the street,
a scalding geyser of steam and debris
shot hundreds of feet into the air.
To Jason Varnar, the sound was terrifying.
He was bartending at a nearby restaurant.
“The lava, steam, smoke, all coming at you with that rumbling sound accompanying it.”
What was the first thing you thought when you saw all of that
coming down the street right towards you?
“If I don’t run, I’m gonna die.”

Hundreds of commuters poured out of Grand Central terminal.
One 51-year-old woman was literally scared to death,
dying from a heart attack.
Some 40 people were injured.
A driver was badly burned when his tow truck landed in the crater.
The pipe that burst was more than 80 years old and covered in asbestos.
City officials say while tests show no asbestos in the air,
there is contamination in the dirt and debris that settled on the ground.
Those who have to be in the area are wearing protective face masks.

“My first thought was, if it’s a terrorist attack.”
Nashim Shamala was thinking about 911 as he shot this video from his office window.
City officials say the health risk from contamination is minimal,
but in this post 911 era, they still have to evaluate how well they responded
and also deal with the city’s aging infrastructure.
