Over the past year, scientists have issued their most dire predictions yet about climate change.
As part of ABC’s Earth Day coverage in Prime Time tonight
we’re gonna have correspondents reporting from various spots all around the world.
Looking at the problems and possible solutions
and one of those places is the Amazon rain forest of Brazil,
home to one of the planet’s most spectacular, diverse, and fragile ecosystems.
And ABC’s John Quinones is there. John?

Well, Charlie, the Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world,
stretching for more than 2 million square miles.
The people who live here and there are still some 200 native tribes here,
they like to say that the Amazon is their grocery store, their pharmacy,
of course it is, not only for them, but for all of us.
If ever there was a Garden of Eden, this would be it,
home to some 500,000 species of plants,
two and a half million species of insects.

There are jaguars here, alligators, anacondas, and of course these towering trees.
You want a cure for global warming, this is it.
They absorb some of the excess carbon dioxide
that modern man spews into the atmosphere. And guess what?
They give us back oxygen.
An average tree can provide enough oxygen for a family of four for an entire year.

You would think we want to preserve these.
Well, instead, just take a look over here
to what’s happening to so much of the Amazon as well as forests around the world.
After decades of talking about saving the rainforest,
it’s being decimated at the rate of some 50 million acres a year. Charlie?

But John, you know, when people look at that,
they think, I can’t make a difference,
I mean I’m just one person and the desire for wood around the world is so great.
Is there something average people can do
essentially to save the rainforest?

Absolutely, there are products now being sold,
everything from lumber to cosmetics to fast food, Charlie,
that no longer, uh, exploit the rainforest.
They’re hard to find, but you can find them. Of course, the other thing is recycle.
Buy recycled goods and then recycle, especially paper.

아마존은 세계 최대의 열대우림 지역으로 그 면적이 2백만 평방마일을 넘습니다. 이곳에는 아직도 200여 개의 토착부족들이 살고 있습니다. 이들은 아마존이 그들의 식료품점이면서 동시에 약국이라고 말하곤 합니다. 하지만 이 얘기는 토착부족민들 뿐 아니라 우리 모두에게 맞는 말입니다. 에덴동산이 있었다면 아마도 바로 아마존이 그곳이었을 것입니다. 아마존에는 식물 50만 종, 곤충 250만 종이 서식하고 있습니다.

아마존에는 재규어, 악어, 아나콘다뿐 아니라 하늘을 찌를 것 같은 나무가 가득합니다. 이 나무가 바로 지구온난화를 해결해 주는 대책이 될 수 있습니다. 이 나무는 현대의 인류가 대기중으로 내뿜는 이산화탄소를 흡수하고 산소를 돌려줍니다. 나무 한 그루가 생산해 내는 산소의 양은 4인 가족이 1년 동안 숨쉴 수 있는 양에 해당합니다.

그렇다면 사람들이 이런 나무를 보존할 거라는 생각이 드시겠죠? 하지만 이곳을 한 번 보십시오. 세계 도처의 숲뿐 아니라 아마존의 열대우림에서 일어나고 있는 일들입니다. 열대우림을 살려야 한다는 얘기가 이미 수십 년 전부터 있었지만, 숲은 연 5천만 에이커의 속도로 그 크기가 줄어들고 있습니다.

그런데 시민들은 아무리 그런 것을 봐도 자신이 할 수 있는 일이 없다고 생각하게 됩니다. 목재에 대한 전세계의 수요가 엄청난데, 나 혼자서 어떻게 할 수 있을까 하고 생각하게 되는 것이죠. 저희 같은 일반 시민들이 열대우림을 살리기 위해 할 수 있는 일이 없을까요?

물론 있습니다. 목재에서부터, 화장품, 패스트 푸드에 이르기까지 열대우림의 나무를 지나치게 벌목하지 않는 것을 원칙으로 하여 생산되는 제품들이 있습니다. 찾기 어렵지만 그런 제품은 분명 있습니다. 또 다른 방법은 재활용입니다. 재활용 제품을 사고, 특히 종이와 같은 것들을 재활용 하면 됩니다. 아마존 열대 우림에서 막 비를 맞기 시작하는 존 퀴논스 기자였습니다.

- 문장 앞부분의 After ~ the rain forest는 '수십년 동안 열대우림을 보존해야 한다는 얘기를 한 후에'로 직역되지만, '수십년 동안 열대우림을 보존해야 한다는 얘기를 해왔지만'으로 해석하는 것이 자연스럽다. decimate는 '줄이다'를 뜻하는 동사로 흔히 매우 많은 양을 줄이거나 죽이는 상황에서 사용된다. at the rate of A는 'A의 속도로, A의 비율로'를 뜻하며, rate가 여기서는 속도를 뜻하고 있다.
