Finally tonight, got milk?
Got an idea what’s in milk?
The fact that milk has protein and calcium and other nutrients,
Well, people know about those things and there are major reason milk is a $20 billion a year business.
But a lot of milk also contains a synthetic hormone injected into cows.

Before it ever gets to your cappuccino,
or your kids’ lunch box,
milk starts out in dairies like this.
Dennis Oreas injects his cows with a synthetic hormone called RBST.
“What it does is, it enhances her appetite to get her to eat more.
The more she eats, the more she will milk.”

Use of the hormone increases the cow’s milk production up to 15%.
But starting in August, Oreas and other California dairy farmers will either have to stop using the hormone
or pay a penalty.
Companies including Starbucks, Safeway, Kroger and Dean Foods are now considering
doing away with milk that has RBST.
They say consumers are pressuring them.

Monsento, the hormone manufacturer says there is no difference between RBST and non-RBST milk.
It is FDA approved and no study has linked it to negative health effects in humans.
Still, parents are concerned.
“I notice the girls hitting puberty a little bit earlier,
the one who had a lot of milk in their diet.”
“Well, it just makes sense to me to try to make sure that our food is as clean as possible.”

By year’s end, most milk in California will be RBST free.
And with so many dairy products made here,
milk produced this new way may be coming your way soon.

오늘 마지막 소식입니다. 우유 드셔보셨습니까? 우유 속에 뭐가 들어 있는지 아시나요? 우유 속에 단백질, 칼슘 등의 영양소가 들어 있다는 것은 모두 아는 사실입니다. 우유 시장이 연 200억 달러 규모의 시장이라는 데에는 여러 가지 이유가 있을 것입니다. 하지만 많은 종류의 우유 속에는 젖소에게 투여된 합성호르몬도 들어 있습니다. 이 사실을 알고 있는 사람들은 그런 우유를 별로 좋아하지 않죠. ABC 미구엘 마르케즈 기자가 보도합니다.

사람들이 좋아하는 카푸치노나 아이들의 점심도시락에 빠지지 않는 우유는 목장에서 이렇게 생산됩니다. 데니스 오레아스씨가 RBST라는 합성호르몬을 젖소에 투여합니다. "RBST가 투여된 젖소는 식욕이 높아져 더 많이 먹습니다. 그러면 우유를 더 많이 생산하게 되죠."

합성호르몬을 사용할 경우 우유생산량은 15%까지 증가합니다. 하지만 올 8월부터 오레아스씨를 비롯한 캘리포니아 낙농업자들은 RBST 사용을 중단해야 합니다. 그렇지 않을 경우 벌금을 받게 되죠. 스타벅스, 세이프웨이, 크로거, 딘 푸즈 등은 RBST를 사용한 우유를 쓰지 않을 것을 고려하고 있습니다. 이들 기업들은 소비자 단체의 압력을 받고 있다고 설명합니다.

RBST를 생산하는 기업인 몬센토(Monsento)는 RBST를 사용한 우유와 그렇지 않은 우유 사이에 차이가 없다고 주장합니다. RBST는 식약청에서도 허가한 약물이며, RBST가 인체에 유해한 영향을 끼친다는 사실을 보고하는 연구도 없었다는 것이죠. 하지만 부모들은 그래도 걱정이 됩니다. "우유를 많이 먹은 아이들이 사춘기를 늦게 경험하는 것 같습니다." "우리가 먹는 음식을 최대한 깨끗하게 해야 한다는 것에는 전적으로 동의합니다."

- 'A와 B의 관계'를 영어로 표현할 때에 흔히 relationship between A and B로 많이 쓰는데, link 역시 비슷하게 쓸 수 표현이다. 자주 쓰이는 표현으로는 link/linkage between A and B (A와 B의 관계), link A to B (A를 B와 관련짓다), A is linked to B (A는 B와 관계가 있다) 등이 있다. 관계의 성격을 나타내기 위해서는 positive, negative 등의 수식어를 앞에 붙여 negative link/linkage between A and B, link A positively to B, A is negatively linked to B 와 같이 표현할 수 있다.

- RBST-free에 사용된 free는 '~가 없는'을 뜻한다. 이와 유사하게 smoke-free는 '금연의'를 뜻하고, nuclear-free는 '핵이 없는'(한반도 비핵화와 관련된 기사 등에서 많이 쓰이는 표현), carefree는 '걱정없는'을 뜻한다.
