Out of nowhere, the deadest shooting rampage in American history.

“It’s so hard to describe. It’s just…it’s just completely unreal.”
What we know about the victims tonight
and the man who, police say, pulled the trigger
heavily armed and dangerous and what might have set him off.
This is a special edition of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, reporting tonight from Blacksburg, Virginia.

And good evening from the campus of Virginia Tech.
This is easily the saddest place in our nation tonight
because this place will now be known forever
as the scene of the largest mass shooting in US history.
This campus is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains about 40 miles from Roanoke, Virginia.

Virginia Tech is home to a student body of about 26,000.
Tonight, the death toll here stands at 33.
The result of a horror that unfolded here early this morning.
There were apparently two separate shooting incidents two hours apart.
And so tonight, there are 33 dead, at least 26 wounded
in what is again the deadest shooting rampage in our nation’s history.

Tonight, we have extensive coverage of what happened here
and tonight’s broadcast, by the way,
will be presented with limited commercial interruption because of this event.
We’re going to begin our coverage with my colleague Kevin Quark
who was our first correspondent
on the scene today and he’s with me tonight. Kevin? Good evening.

Brian? All day long people here in Blacksburg have been asking questions like
why did this happen and who would do such a thing,
but also tonight we’re hearing quite often
how could this happen here in Blacksburg,
a town where peace and quiet are usually taken for granted.

Shortly after down when many students were still sleeping,
shots ring out inside the West Ambler Johnston Dormitory
on the sprawling Virginia Tech campus.
Nearly 900 students live there.
The attack comes without warning on the 4th floor.
The gunman shooting multiple students,
killing at least two women, a student and a resident assistant.
“A boy friend and girl friend who were in a fight
and the R.A. came out to help
and the boy friend shot the girl and R.A.”

오늘 블랙스버그 주민들은 하루 종일 서로에게 "왜 이런 사건이 발생한 것일까? 누가 이런 끔찍한 일은 한 것일까?"라고 물었습니다. "평화와 조용한 삶이 당연시 되는 블랙스버그 같은 곳에서 어떻게 이런 일이 일어날 수 있느냐"라는 물음도 있었습니다.

아직도 많은 학생들이 잠을 자고 있었던 새벽녘, 이리저리 뻗어있는 버지니아 공대 캠퍼스의 웨스트 앰블러 존스턴 기숙사에서 총성이 울렸습니다. 이 기숙사에는 약 900명의 학생들이 거주하고 있습니다. 총을 소지한 한 남성은 아무 경고 없이 4층에서 학생들에게 총을 쏘기 시작했습니다. 여성 두 명과 학생 한 명, 그리고 기숙사 사감이 목숨을 잃었습니다. "한 커플이 싸우고 있었습니다. 기숙사 사감이 상황을 해결하려고 나섰는데, 그 때 그 남학생이 자신의 여자친구와 사감을 총으로 쏘았습니다."
