Good evening. It was just before lunch time in Los Angeles when we got a frantic call from our West Coast bureau chief. “We’re having an earthquake," he said. “We’ve just gotten out from under our desks.” Well, that gets your attention. It turned out the quake was moderate in size, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and felt hundreds of miles away.
Property damage was minor, but damage to people’s nerves was major. ABC’s Miguel Marquez is in Pomona, California near the epicenter tonight. Miguel? Charlie, we are just a few miles from the epicenter. And it is this sort of building, these old brick and mortar buildings that officials were most concerned about in this quake. As you can see, some of them did come down.
The quake struck just before noon. A jolt was felt from Los Angeles south to San Diego and even as far east as Las Vegas. "When it hit it shook and then it... the building just swayed and swayed and it continued for, I guess, about a little over five minutes." "It’s almost like you’re on a... a ride. It just kind of jolts you."
The L.A. city council was taking a vote, when it hit. "We got an earthquake. Still happening. We got an earthquake. The building is rolling." Nerves were frayed as students scrambled out of schools and workers evacuated buildings all over Los Angeles. "My god! The building is going to come tumbling, you know, I... I freaked out." "And they told us to evacuate, so we just got out of the building as fast as we could.
There have been no reports of extensive damage or injury but there have been a few power outages, a water main break in downtown L.A., and merchandisescattered off supermarket shelves. "And I just saw the ceiling just moving and I just grabbed the pharmacist by the shoulder and just hold on to her really hard and then everything was moving and shaking. The ceiling was vibrating a lot."
The governor said Californians were very lucky this time. "This earthquake reminds us yet once again that in California we have to be prepared for anything and everything." There have been dozens of aftershocks since this quake hit and Charlie, scientists say that there is a slight chance that this particular earthquake was a foreshock for a bigger quake.
