Treating Depression
인쇄하기
Tonight, we have "a closer look" at cutting-edge medicine that's offering new hope for some patients with very severe depression. More than 21 million Americans suffer from depression. For about 4 million, nothing helps. Not drugs. Not psychotherapy. Nothing. Now, a highly experimental new treatment is being tried on only 17 patients so far.

But it's provided real relief to eight of them, as we say new and highly experimental. Here's John Mckenzie. The pictures are crystal clear, just like the memories - for Diane Hire, painful reminders of 20 years of severe, unrelenting depression. "You felt like a dead person walking. There was just nothing left in me." Diane, who's 54, was prescribed one anti-depressant after another and psychotherapy.

Nothing worked. She tried to commit suicide three times. "It was unbearable. It was just unbearable." Finally, her psychiatrist suggested a radically different, experimental treatment - deep brain stimulation. The same procedure used safely for two decades to calm the tremors of Parkinson's disease is now being tested on severe depression.

"We slowly advance this probe into the brain. And it goes to the precise location where there's abnormal activity going on, resulting in depression." "And what do you do once you're there? " "We activate it by sending precise tiny electrical signals." "So, these electrical pulses change someone's mood?" "That's correct."

Watch what happens to Diane. With her head in a brace, so it cannot budge, and the electrodes deep inside her brain, doctors start adding those electrical pulses. "I'm starting to smile. I feel happy." "You feel happy?" "Uh-huh." Minutes later, doctors increase the electrical intensity, and Diane's mood improves further. "It felt good." "When was the last time you felt like this?" "Oh, I can't even remember when."

Then, another tweak and those electrical pulses get even stronger. "Just feel happier." To keep her depression-free, doctors then implant these pacemakers in her chest, and bury the wires under her skin, so that those electrical pulses keep flowing into her brain. "This is how you really are? " 'This is me, yeah." "This was you before the depression?" "Yes. Yes." "Happy to be back?" "Oh, it's so wonderful." So wonderful to feel so alive. Cheers. Cheers. John Mckenzie, ABC News, Norwalk, Ohio.
