Unknown Tribe Found in Amazon

Extraordinary pictures have emerged from Brazil showing what's claimed to be a previously undiscovered Indian tribe in the Amazon jungle.  People are shown aiming their bows and arrows at an aircraft which flew over their village near the border with Peru. There are believed to be more than a hundred uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru.  From Brazil, Gary Duffy reports.

Could these be images of one of the world's last "lost" tribes?  Deep in the Brazilian jungle it's thought these pictures show members of an unidentified Indian community, clearly startled by the intrusion of a small plane flying above.  Carrying spears and bows and arrows, these people have had no contact with the outside world.

In the 21st century they live lifestyles which may not have changed significantly for a thousand years.  "The most important thing is that this is a new discovery of people who've been living there a long time photographed in their village."  It's thought there are around a hundred uncontacted tribes left in the world.

An uncertain number of
these isolated communities are living in Brazil. This newly discovered group lives in a remote area, close to the border with Peru.  These arrows and this bow belong to a man who's never seen a European face. So does this house.   Almost everyone else has been reached by the outside world, but this was David Attenborough making one such contact in the 1970s.

Every one of them had two ritual punctures in his nose and he had pegs in them. Even today Indian communities in Brazil are living traditional lifestyles, as the BBC's Bruce Perry discovered.  But these are poor communities who often need the support of government agencies and many Brazilian Indians are finding the old way of doing things are being changed.

Illegal logging and mining are among the pressures which have pushed some Indian communities off their land and even threatened their livelihood. For the remote Indian communities which even now are just being discovered, the outside world seems more of a threat than an opportunity.  Activists say if their land is not protected, they could soon face extinction.  Gary Duffy BBC News, Sao Paulo.
