They were two perfectly insignificant and incapable individuals,

whose exitstence is only rendered possible through the high organization of civilized crowds.

Few men realize that their life, the very essence of their character, their capabilities and their audacities,

are only the ｅxpression of their belief in the safety of their surroundings.

The courage, the composure, the comfidence; the emotions and principles;

every great and every insignificant thought belongs not to the individual but to the crowd:to the crowd that believes blindly in the irresistible force of its institutions and of its morals, in the power of its police and of its opinion.

But the contact with pure unmitigated savagery, with primitive nature and primitive man, brings sudden and profound trouble into the heart.

To the sentiment of being alone of one's kind, to the clear perception of the loneliness of one's thoughts, of one's sensations - to the negation of the habitual, which is safe, 

there is added the affirmation of the unusual, which is dangerous.

 

그들은 전적으로 하찮고 무능한 두 인간에 불과했으며, 그들의 존재는 고도의 문명인들의 조직을 통해서만 가능했다.

인간의 생활, 인격의 본질, 인간의 능력과 대담성이란 단지 인간이 자기들의 환경의 안전함을 믿고 있다는 것을 표현한 것에 지나지 않는다는 것을

깨닫고 있는 사람은 거의 없다.

용기, 침착성, 자신감, 감정의 원칙, 일체의 위대한 사상과 사소한 사상은 모두 개인에 속하는 것이 아니라 집단에 속한다.

불가항력적인 그들의 기관과 그 도덕의 힘, 경찰과 여론의 힘을 맹신하는 집단 말이다.

그러나 순수한 그대로의 야만, 원시적 자연과 원시인들과 접하게 되면 사람은 느닷없이 심각한 진통을 겪게 된다.

자기의 종족으로부터 홀로 떨어져 있다는 느낌, 자기의 생각과 느낌이 자기 혼자만의 것이라는 사실을 명백히 지각하는것-안전함을 뜻하는 습관의 부정-위에 위험함을 뜻하는 생소한 것에 대한 긍정이 더해진다.

 

아프리카 오지에서 두 문명인이 서서히 파괴되어 간다.

문명의 위대성과 도덕이란 결국 인간집단의 상호의존에 기인한 것일뿐,

문명인이 고립되어 살아갈 경우 원시의 힘 앞에서 얼마나 무력하며

또한 얼마나 이기적으로 되는가를 생생하게 묘사하여 문명의 위선을 벗겨내고 있다.

 

결국 우리는 집단에 속하고 집단에 익숙하기 위한 삶을 배우며

집단을 떠난 우리가 얼마나 불완전한가?
