Face Transplant

We’re going to turn next to medical news and the pioneering surgery that may bring a profound change to transplant surgery.  It certainly has brought a profound change to one woman’s life.  Doctors at the Cleveland clinic today described in detail the first face transplant ever performed in this country.  ABC’s Dan Harris reports from Cleveland.

It is the first glimpse of an historic surgery, one that took 22 hours and involved a team of 8 surgeons working in shifts.  Dr. Maria Sieminow was the lead surgeon.  “I am very proud and emotional today to share with you that we have finally did it.”  This is a 3D image of the patient, an unnamed woman, who had suffered major facial trauma several years ago, and was unable to smell, smile, or blink her eyes.

“She would walk on the street and kids would, um, you know, run away in horror.”  By taking parts from a brain dead donor of the same gender, race,  and age, doctors transplanted a new nose, cheeks, upper jaw, upper lip, palate, teeth, and lower eyelids. In your opinion, how did it go?  “I think it went according to the plan. It went well, and the patient is doing well.”

“The first thing she did, she held my hand, and she licked her new lips.”  The patient is now recovering here at the Cleveland clinic and she has a long road ahead of her.  She’s going to have to do physical therapy to learn how to use the muscles in her new face.  She’ll also have to take powerful drugs to prevent her body from rejecting the transplant, drugs that could increase the risk of infection and even cancer.

... Which is why some bioethicists have expressed concerns about face transplants, because it’s a life-threatening procedure for a non-life-threatening condition.  Doctors here in Cleveland have a different take.  “I’m someone who thinks that quality of life is as important as quantity of life, and for severe quality of life problems like this patient had, I think that the risks are, uh, justified.”

They say they’re allowing a woman who was essentially confined to her home to interact with society.  As one doctor said today, “You need a face to face the world.”  Dan Harris, ABC News, Cleveland.
