French police are hunting for four thieves who carried out the biggest jewelry raid the country has ever seen.  Seventeen million pounds worth of rings and necklaces and other gems were stolen when the four stormed into one of Paris’s most prestigious stores and swept the jewelry into sacks.  The same store had been raided just last year.  Jon Brain joins us from Paris now.  Jon.

Sharm, this raid was breathtaking, not only for its size, but for its sheer audacity.  It happened just around the corner from the Champs d’Elysees, in an area packed with Christmas shoppers.  Four men came here.  At least two of them were wearing wigs and women’s clothes.  They burst into this store and took virtually everything.  It was all over in less than 15 minutes.

The Paris branch of Harry Winston, shopkeepers to the very rich and the very famous, today, standing forlorn and emptied of its precious contents.  The raid was planned to the last detail.  The robbers, who were brandishing guns, even knew the names of the staff.  They certainly knew exactly what they were looking for. “We didn’t see anything,” says this woman, who works in a shop next door.  “It’s difficult to imagine something like this could happen in broad daylight.”

Harry Winston is a byword for opulence, selling some of the most expensive jewelry on the market.  Its customers include royalty and film stars.  The police are now playing catch- up, trying to even identify the men behind this heist, let alone apprehend them.  “It was an open attack that took place in the middle of the day,” he says. “Those who carried it out showed a lot of calm and daring.”

This is just the latest in a series of high-profile jewel heists.  In February 2003, crooks in Belgium emptied vaults full of diamonds worth 86 million pounds.  The following year, two diamonds worth 10 million pounds were stolen from a show at the Louvre in Paris, and last year the same Harry Winston store in Paris was robbed, thieves taking just over eight and a half million  pounds worth. The goods taken that time still haven’t been recovered. The police say it’s too early to say if there’s a link between the two raids.

Well, the question being asked this evening is how do you get rid of 17 million pounds worth of jewels?  Well, one theory being worked on is that the robbers have already taken them to Eastern Europe.  Sharm.  John, thanks very much.  Jon Brain, from Paris.
