Cyclone Crisis in Myanmar

So, we turn, now, overseas. And the full scope of the disaster in Myanmar, the country many still call Burma, is becoming clearer, and it is staggering. The chief U.S. diplomat in the country says the death toll from the monster cyclone, might reach 100,000. The estimates seem to multiply every day. However, the reaction of Myanmar’s military rulers seems to be making things worse. Here's abc's Jim Sciutto.

This is the cyclone's aftermath up close. Traumatized survivors, surrounded by floodwaters filled with the dead. only my child and I survived," she says. "No one else is left." Myanmar is struggling to recover with almost no organized relief effort. Buddhist monasteries have become makeshift hospitals and shelters. “We have nothing,” she says. “We're totally dependent on the monks.”

What little rice is left here is guarded by this young monk. The government is just beginning to allow international aid in, accepting it from Thailand, India and China, Myanmar’s neighbors and biggest trading partners, but delaying or not responding at all to aid ready to deploy from across the globe, including the U.S.

This California warehouse for Direct Relief International is packed with medical supplies. Normally, it would already be well on its way. The delays in accepting aid have led France to urge the U.N., to invoke its responsibility to protect civilians' clause. That would authorize the delivery of assistance without the permission of Myanmar’s military rulers.

"The government's only thinking about staying in power. To them, it's an unexpected event. They want to make it a small hiccup. They want to preserve the status quo. Saturday’s cyclone, seen here on new amateur video, may soon have implications far beyond Myanmar’s boarders.

It all but destroyed the rice crop in one of Asia’s most fertile areas, which could push soaring world food prices even higher. Rice is already running short in Myanmar. With no clean water, some have only coconut milk to drink. Victims are struggling simply to survive, one more day. Jim Sciutto, abc news, Bangkok.
