They’re supposed to make you healthy, but it seems vitamin pills could do you more harm than good. Researchers in Denmark say that far from prolonging our lives, some could be harmful in large doses and lead to an earlier death. Well our Medical Correspondent Fergus Walsh is here to explain. Fergus.

Well, researchers analyzed 67 clinical trials involving 230 thousand people to try to find out the effects of antioxidant vitamin supplements on health. There’s no doubt many Britains believe they work. Sales are worth 360 million pounds a year, and they’re taken by 4 in 10 adults. But the findings were worrying.

Vitamin A supplements were associated with a 16% increased mortality risk. Beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, was linked to a 7% increased risk, and Vitamin E to a 4% increase. For both vitamin C and selenium, there was no evidence either way for positive or negative effects. So how are antioxidant supplements supposed to help?

Well, free radicals are molecules in the body which can slowly damage tissue over time causing aging and disease. Many believe that the antioxidants in these vitamin supplements can mop up or neutralize the free radicals, promoting good health. But it’s possible this could also have damaging effects in large doses.

“You might be taking multivitamin supplements, you might be taking fish oils, you might be taking calcium. That’s probably a reasonable combination for many elderly people. But if you’re also taking uh...extra antioxidants as well, then I think you may…actually be doing yourself more harm than good, especially if you’re overweight, a heavy drinker, or if you have liver or kidney problems. They’re specific problems that increase the risk of these dangers.”

A healthy diet is the best and most natural source for vitamins, but only 1 in 4 adults manages 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. So aren’t supplements a good idea? “Just because we need some of them doesn’t necessarily mean that more is better. And in fact, more can imbalance our system. So that[sic] is really better to get them from food and in addition, food will give you all sorts of other things that you won’t get from the supplement."

It’s actually more than a year since this worrying research was first published, yet there’s been no drop in sales of vitamin supplements. It seems many of us prefer to pick and choose which health risks we take note of, George. Fergus, thank you.
