We’re going to turn next to the changing world of television. A year from now, if you watch television on a set that needs an antenna, well, it’s going to be worthless. For a year from now, the country switches exclusively to digital TV. Now, the federal government will give you $40 to help you switch over, but with the older type of equipment, if you don’t update it, you won’t be able to see anything. Lisa Stark explains.
Imagine you’re watching your favorite television show - “…winners and new champions of Dancing With the Stars are…” … and suddenly, this. (Static noise) It could happen to tens of millions of Americans if they don’t take action before the big digital switchover. “On February 17, 2009, your picture’s going to look like this, no picture at all.”
Those affected - anyone who has an analog television that relies on rabbit ears or rooftop antenna for programming. The industry is starting to get the word out. “But without an upgrade, some TVs will stop working.” “No. Ha-ha. That I wasn’t aware of.” It’s all confusing for consumers.
“About a quarter of people think that they have to throw all their sets in the trash…uh. That’s absolutely not the case.” What affected consumers do need to do is buy a converter box like this one, which will allow analog TVs to display the digital signal. “This is a coupon, good for $40, and we’ll send two for each household that requests a coupon.”
This is a massive switchover for the nation, and consumers will need accurate information from those on the front lines: the retailclerks. This is a situation ripe for fraud. one consumer group did its own undercover survey and found 20 percent of clerks tried to get shoppers to buy new TVs they really didn’t need.
