Our doctors have been telling us for years to watch how much salt we take in, and today, America’s most prominent doctors’ organization asked the government to join the cause. Their evidence was astonishing. At an FDA hearing, the American Medical Association said excess salt in our meals kills 150,000 people a year.
But food companies argue it’s none of the government’s business. Here’s ABC’s Lisa Stark. It’s lurking in the grocery aisles, included in most of the processedfood we eat: salt. Eat a bagel, there goes about 20 percent of the daily recommended serving of salt. A bowl of soup: 40 percent. one Lunchable: 45 percent.
Or this Hungry-Man dinner: a whopping 89 percent of all your daily salt. -- Salt is probably the single most harmful thing in our food, contributing to high blood pressure which causes heart attacks and strokes.
The American Medical Association puts the death toll from excessive salt consumption in graphic terms: “The equivalent of a jumbo jet with more than 400 passengers crashing every day.” That’s why the FDA today was urged to set sodium limits for processed foods and to require warning labels on foods high in salt.
Manufacturers are vigorously opposed, saying they’re already cutting back. -- There’s been a lot that has been done voluntarily over the last several years. And I think it’s to the benefit of the American consumer. Still, three-quarters of the salt we eat every day comes not from the salt shaker, but from processed foods and restaurant meals.
It’s enough of the concern that the British government is pressuring companies to cut the salt. (“The salt - is your food full of it?”) It’s working. McDonald’s chicken nuggets sold in Britain have half as much sodium as nuggets in the US. And Kellogg’s Special K: about 60 percent less sodium than the US version.
