Our closer look tonight is at the role of government. What is government’s responsibility to regulate, or when should government simply leave people alone? The issue in this case is soft drinks, soda pop. Ten percent of the average child’s daily calories now come from sweetened drinks. And the mayor of San Francisco is looking for a way to change that.
Is it any of his business? Some applaud him; others are fuming. Here’s ABC’s Miguel Marquez. San Francisco’s mayor wants the city to slim down, and he’s going after sugary soft drinks to whip it into shape. -- We have obesity rates and overweight issues in this country with 65 percent of the citizens. That is a health-related cost uh…that all of us are bearing.
The plan: charging a fee to big retailers selling soft drinks to fund healthy eating programs. The hope? To discourage people from drinking so much soda. Doctors say just a single soda a day without cutting back on other food could add as much as 15 pounds to your gut every year. -- I think that soft drinks to which sugar has been added or fruit drinks to which sugar has been added…uh…really are a health hazard.
But critics say the government is going way too far. -- It’s an egregiousundermining of freedom, freedom to choose what I eat or what I don’t eat. The American Beverage Association calls it a “soda tax” and says why not tax computer and video game manufacturers that are keeping us on the couch. Opponents say personal freedom is under attack across the country. Smoking is banned just about everywhere. Make sense: smoking is so deadly.
But now, cities are going further, targeting food fried in unhealthy trans- fats. The children’s game, tag, was considered too dangerous and banned in some schools. San Francisco officials insist a tax on soda is needed because it will promote public health. But the fundamental question: who is responsible for a healthy diet - the government or the individual?
-- When government goes from trying to convince you not to do the wrong thing to actually coercing you to do the right thing, it’s jumped over that line.
