We’re going to start tonight with an ABC News exclusive. An investigative reporter has found children as young as ten years old working in horrible conditions in a slum in India. These kids were making clothes destined for Gap stores in this country.
The Gap is reacting quickly tonight, but this episode shows yet again how tough it is for American consumers to know what…who is making what we buy. ABC’s Hilary Brown has the story. According to a published report, these children aged ten to thirteen were working as virtual slaves, stitchingembroidered shirts for Gap Kids. The clothes were to be shipped out to the US next week, just in time for the Christmas season.
The video clearly shows a Gap label on the back of each garment. It shows the location of the sweatshop down a back alley in a run-down section of Southern Delhi. The video was obtained by ABC News from an investigative journalist, who said the children were working without pay in filthy conditions, and that they had all been transported from an impoverished state in the north of India.
-- And they’ve been trafficked by train. It’s…it’s nicknamed the Child Labor Express. Um…at any given time you can see, you know, 80 children on this huge train, and most of them are being trafficked to work, generally in the…in the garment industry. Gap Inc. was quick to order a full investigation into the allegations. The company says it makes all its suppliers sign a pledge not to use children.
-- This is a completely unacceptable event that happened, and we do not ever, ever condone any child labor making our garments. We act swiftly. And quite honestly I’m very grateful that this was brought to our attention. The Gap farmsout huge production orders to subcontractors in the developing world, where child labor is virtually endemic. It has almost hundred inspectors monitoring 2,700 factories worldwide, it says.
But in India, one of its suppliers evidently broke the rule. In India, as many as 80 million children are working in appalling conditions, according to Save the Children. It’s known as the child labor capital of the world. -- No schooling, no health, you know. They often suffer terribly. Developmentally they don’t grow as they ought to grow. Their eyes can suffer, their hands can suffer. While the Gap continues its investigation, the company says the garments made by these children will never reach its shelves; they have been destroyed.
