Life Expectancies Increase
Good evening. We begin tonight with a story about you and me and about all of us. New government census and health statistics out today provide a fascinating portrait of how we live and work. For example, we’re living longer - a lot longer than our parents. Fifty years ago, the average American lived 69.6 years. Ten years ago, it was 75.8. Now, the average American lives 77.9 years. Why are our lives getting longer? ABC’s Lisa Stark joins me tonight from here in Washington. Lisa.

Well Charlie, this is all about winning the war against some of the biggest killers of Americans. Death rates are down for heart disease, stroke, and cancer, and that’s why we have improved life expectancy. There’s no question staying active and in shape helps us live longer.
-- Use it or lose it. And that is very, very true.
be (all) about something : used for saying what the most basic or important aspect of a particular job, activity, or relationship is
ex. Loving and sharing - that's what marriage is (all) about. / ex. Good management is all about motivating your staff.

in/out of shape : in good/bad physical condition

But much more important is that progress against some of the nation’s biggest killers. Physicians say a decrease in smoking and wider use of drugs to lower cholesterol and blood pressure have helped reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke. And as smoking has dropped, so has lung cancer. Also down, deaths from breast and colon cancer.
blood pressure : high blood pressure : 고혈압
colon : 결장
ex. colon cancer: 결장암 , 대장암
-- People are listening. They’re having their cancers identified at an earlier stage when more effective treatments are available. And they’re also seeking treatments to prevent it from coming back.
The latest numbers show there’s still a disparity in life expectancy between genders and races. Women continue to live longer than men, and whites longer than blacks. But that gap is narrowing.
The big question: whether gains in life expectancy will continue, with a third of the population now obese and diabetes up threefold.
-- We really do need to turn this around if we want to continue to make progress in living longer, and equally importantly, living better.
A sobering thought for those just starting out. But those who track life expectancy say the trend line has always moved one way.
-- Over a century, life expectancies increased, and…I don’t really have any reason to expect that it won’t continue to do so.
gain : ( 노력해서 ) 얻다 , 획득하다 , ( 체중이 ) 늘다 , 진보 , 향상 , 증가 (an improvement or increase in something), 얻는 것 , 이익 (a benefit or advantage)

* put it back on track : 다시 궤도에 올려놓다 .
* keep track of ~: ···을 기억하고 있다 , < 사태의 진전상황 등을 > 계속 알고 있다 .
(opp. lose track of ~ ~ 을 놓치다 , 잊다 .
ex. It's hard to keep track of time in here.
ex. I lost track of time.

And as we live longer, those in the Social Security Administration, financial planners, the insurance industry - they all have to change their thinking. Some predict that the Social Security Administration may have to make retirement age 85 one day, and that financial planners will have to prepare their clients to live to a hundred. Charlie.
