Good evening? For days, there has been a drumbeat
from democrats and even a few republicans that the Attorney General needs to step aside
as a result of the controversy over the firing of eight US attorneys.
The President has been relatively quiet as the issue has bubbled up in Washington.
A short while ago, emphatically Mr. Bush spoke out,
claiming democrats were on a fishing expedition,
looking only to score political points.
And he stood strongly behind his Attorney General.
ABC’s Jonathan Karl is tonight at the White House. John?
Charlie? The president was defiant tonight,
but he also offered democrats an olive branch
saying that he would allow congress to question his top aides, even Carol Rove.
But that was an offer that came with strings attached.
The President offered an unambiguous statement of support for his embattled Attorney General.
“He’s got support with me.”
In an effort to appease those on Capitol Hill
demanding more information on the decision to fire those US attorneys,
the President offered to allow Carol Rove and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers
to be interviewed by congress.
“However we will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition
aimed at honorable public servants.”
That was a reference to democratic demands that White House officials testify in public and under oath.
Today, White House counsel Fred Fielding
made it clear that is not going to happen.
In a letter to congress, he said the interviews must be conducted in private
that Rove and Miers would not be under oath.
There would be no transcript
and no follow-up testimony.
Democrats critiqued that offer was scorn.
