Television presents a distilled derivative of real life.

we see in ways that wouldn't be possible in real life;

we look down from the sky, then zero in on a face for a close-up, then zoom across a landscape.

 

In real life, problens often take years to solve and sometimes can't be solved at all,

but on television all preblems are neatly wrapped up in a show's thifty of sixty minutes.

 

Our actual experience of reality is smooth and continuous, as we see, hear, feel, taste, and smell in a regular and seamless way.

 

On television, however, reality is chopped into camera shots that rarely hold for longer than five to seven seconds.

 

텔레비젼은 현실을 정제하고 추출하여 보여준다. 시청자는 결국 비현실적인 방식으로 현실을 보게 된다.

하늘에서 내려다보고 사람의 얼굴을 클로즈업하여 보고 경치를 한눈에 훑어서 확대시켜 보기도 하고 축소시켜 보기도 한다.

현실에서는 어떤 문제를 해결하려면 몇년씩 걸리거나 아예 해결하지 못하기도 하지만

텔레비전이라는 비현실적 세계에서는 30분이나 60분짜리 프로그램 안에서모든 문제가 간결하게 마무리된다.

보고 듣고 느끼고 냄새맡고 맛보는 현실의 체험은 자연스럽고 유기적으로 이어지는 결코 분리할 수 없는 전체의 부분이다.

그러나 텔레비젼에서는 모든 현실이 길어야 5초 내지 7초의 단편적 현상들로 분리된다.

얼마전 황우석 교수의 기자회견을 잠시 본적이 있습니다.

아나운서는 모든 것을 방송하기 전에 지목하여 이대목이대목을 중시하여 보세요

라고 하는데

이 얼마나 눈감고 아웅식으로  시청자들을 우롱하는 것인가 생각했어요

텔레비젼이나 신문은 있는 그대로를 보여 주고 판단은 시청자나 독자가 하는 것인데...
