Meanwhile, no word yet on what caused the crash of Continental flight 1404. You probably heard over the weekend that the Boeing 737, taking off from Denver, headed for Houston, veered off the runway, skidded into a ravine, and caught fire. Today investigators were combing the plane’s remains. A hundred and fifteen were on board. All survived. Thirty-eight were injured. And Lisa Stark tonight is in Denver with the latest on the investigation. Lisa, good evening.
Good evening, Charlie. Well, investigators were out at the crack of dawn looking at the wreckage. They’ve also had their first good look at the data recorders. So far, there’s nothing that would indicate any engine problems, but they are taking a hard look at the winds at the time of takeoff.
This is the first close-up look at the wreckage of the Continental jet, burnt on one side, cracked in two, one engine and most of its landing gear sheared off. Investigators examining the plane’s black boxes say the recorders have useful information. The plane, heading down the runway, was fighting crosswinds, estimated at 31 miles an hour.
Sources say pilots used the tail rudder to counteract the wind, keeping the plane straight. Investigators will want to know if those controls were relaxed causing the plane to veer left. It wasn’t until then, sources say, that pilots tried to abort the takeoff. Other planes had no problemtaking off in the wind. once the jet left the dry runway it may have been difficult to stop on the icy ground. It bumped over a taxiway, an access road, and into a ravine. Fire erupted on the right side.
Passengers described panic, screams, and a mad dash for emergency exits. Everyone got out. This is the third major crash in three years where all passengers survived. “That tells us a lot. It tells us we’re doing much better in getting people off of aircraft and designing aircraft. When you have those type of results, you can’t say it’s luck.” Better design and heroic efforts by flight crews.
“Well I’m glad that the people who were around me handled it the way they did, and because of that, I’m safe today.” This type of accident where planes run off a runway is more common than you might think.
