Good evening, it’s the time of year when we should be enjoying the bounty of summer, eating fresh fruits and vegetableswithout a second thought. But today, health officials said the nationwide salmonella outbreak, 869 cases reported since April, is still growing. And they admitted they cannot find the source.
Tomatoes were suspected from the start, but the government now acknowledges it may have gotten it wrong, leaving consumers scared and the tomato industry paying the price. ABC’s Lisa Stark is in Washington with more tonight, Lisa? Well Charlie, this is now the largest salmonella outbreak linked to fresh produce in U.S. history.
And the question remains, is it the tomatoes? It’s a question that has the tomato industry up in arms. From farms across the country to tomatoes rotting on the vine today in Mexico, this industry is reeling. "Really angry, really frustrated, um, obviously we just wish that the FDA, CDC would get together and get this problem over with."
On Tom Deardorff’s farm in Southern California, crates of tomatoes are ready to ship. He’s hoping there’s a market for them. Deardorff is angry the government still hasn’t pinned down the source of the outbreak and worries what will happen if the uncertainty continues. "And that’s gonna result in a total blood bath. There’s gonna be tomatoes in the field that go overripe, that go unharvested."
With businesses and consumers still wary, farmers are demanding a Congressional investigation into the government warning that may end up costing them hundreds of millions of dollars. The first salmonella case was back in early April. By late May state and federal health officials knew they had an outbreak. Interviews with those sick led officials to blame tomatoes. But to this day the FDA hasn’t been able to find the source, even as illnesses continue.
Government officials are now retracing their steps to look at other possible culprits. "It may be another food, like cilantro or green onions or something served with tomatoes that was just overlookedto begin with." The bottom line? People are still getting sick and the government doesn’t know why. Now today the FDA said tomatoes, raw tomatoes, do remain the lead suspect in this salmonella outbreak, but it is activating a nationwide lab system to begin testing other types of produce if need be.
