The auto industry was a particular drag on the market today.  Gas prices are taking a toll on the auto makers.  Ford announced it’s delaying the introduction of its new F150 pickup by two months and cutting overall production for the rest of the year.  But all the American automakers are having problems - big problems and Betsy Stark is here. Betsy?

Charlie, the outlook for the nation’s big car companies has gone from bad to worse.  2007 was terrible for Ford.  But today the company said it expects to lose even more money in 2008. And 2009, the year it was supposed to be profitable again, the company now says it will be hard just to break even.

Filling up the tank of a Ford F150, the best selling vehicle in America for the last 25 years, now sets you back $110.  (The Ford F150 Super Coupe.  Built Ford tough.) Little wonder Americans are abandoning the gas guzzler in droves.  "The bottom has fallen out of the sales on the biggest vehicles." As recently as 2004, Ford sold 930,000 F150s. This year, analysts say it will be lucky to sell 500,000.

They now expect overall June car sales to be the worst in sixteen years.  That dire forecast explains why Ford is cutting production of trucks and SUVs and why investors are cutting their stakes in the car companies.  In the last two months GM shares have fallen more than 35 percent.  Shares of Ford have dropped 25 percent - a combined loss of more than nine billion dollars in value.

And today, news that their credit ratings are at risk of being slashed.  The auto industry’s latest woes only deepened the despair on Wall Street today.  Investors, worried about another increase in the price of oil, simmering tensions in the Middle East, and forecasts of more losses ahead for the nation’s banks, greeted the news as another excuse to sell.

After the market closed, we got another sign of how much pressure the airline industry is under.  United announced it is raising nearly all domestic fares starting in October and will require overnight stays for the lowest fares - a blow to business travelers who like to make quick round trips.  Alright, Betsy Stark reporting tonight.  Thanks.
