Human Impact on the Environment
인쇄하기
Tonight we have an extraordinary visual representation of what each of us consume in a year, and in a lifetime. It’s quite sobering when you see it all at once, for it brings home just how much impact each American has on the environment. Here’s ABC’s Elizabeth Vargas.

It’s an amazing picture of consumption and waste. Each year, Americans throw out 18 billion disposable diapers - enough to stretch around the world 90 times. That’s part of the reason an American at the age of one already has a bigger carbon footprint than a Tanzanian will have in a lifetime.

In your lifetime, if you’re an average American, you will drink 13,056 pints of milk. Do you like soft drinks? Well, you’ll consume 43,371 sodas and then toss the cans. In our lives, on average, each of us will buy seven washing machines, five refrigerators, seven air conditioners. And each one of these rubber ducks represents a shower that you will take. That’s 28,433 showers over your lifetime using 700,000 gallons of water.

But what about your home itself? It takes on average some 64 trees to provide the wood in your home. More than one million acres of productive farmland and open space gets bulldozed to make way for sprawling development every year in this country. That’s two acres of open land, the area behind me, disappearing every minute, every day.

And as for those diapers, just to make enough diapers for one American toddler for two and a half years takes 1,900 pints of crude oil and the pulp of four and a half trees. Americans make up five percent of the world’s population. If everyone else lived like we do, we would need four planets to supply the resources and store the massive amount of waste. Elizabeth Vargas, ABC News, New York.
