In other news today, a story that sounds like science fiction - but it is real. A broken US spy satellitefilled withtoxicfuel is on the verge of reentering earth’s atmosphere and crashing to earth. Lives would be at risk if it crashed to ground, so the US Navy is going to try and shoot it down. That has never been done before. Here’s Jonathan Carl at the Pentagon.
The reason for shooting the satellite down: its fuel tank contains 1,000 pounds of toxic hydrazine fuel. If it were to land in a populated area, it couldkill. The Navy plans to fire a missile at the satellite from an Aegis ship in the Pacific Ocean sometime next week. The plan: hit the minivan-size satellite at 130 miles above the earth, at the edge of the atmosphere.
If the first shot misses, commanders will have to decide quickly whether to fire two backup missiles. “So it’s a relatively small window. Um…we’ll take one shot and assess, and then we’ll come back and look.” The idea is to hit the satellite in such a way that its pieces either completely burn up or land safely in water, using part of the national missile defense system, which has already been tested on much faster moving ballistic missiles.
This time, the target is a 5,000 pound satellite called USA-193. It started malfunctioning shortly after it was launched in December 2006. “This was the first of a new generation of extremely advanced uh…reconnaissance satellites. Uh…it’s far advanced of anything that the Russians or Chinese have.” Almost everything about it is highly classified, leading tospeculation that there is another unspoken reason for destroying it.
“Souvenir hunters find this thing, sell it on eBay, the Russians and Chinese will get into a bidding war to see who can get these pieces.” The military says it has high confidence that this satellite can be destroyed as planned. High confidence, Charlie, but not complete confidence, because something like this has never been done before. Jonathan Carl, reporting tonight from the Pentagon.
