The Food and Drug Administration declared today that meat and milk from cloned cattle, pigs, and goats is safe to eat. Now the ruling is controversial, but soon you may be buying steak, ham, or milk from cloned animals and you won’t know it. ABC’s Lisa Stark is joining us from the dairy section down in a Washington grocery store tonight. Lisa.
Well, Charlie, this decision will be felt from the farm to the supermarket to kitchens everywhere. It comes after years of study, but that doesn’t make it any less contentious. This decision opens the door to one of the biggest changes in the food we eat. “The meat and milk from cattle, swine, and goat clones are as safe to eat as the food we eat every day.”
This gives a government stamp of approval for animals like Deborah 3, the clone of a prize-winning cow who was a four-time Iowa State fair winner and a top-quality milk producer. Farmer Frank Regan: “With her pedigree and everything we decided to try to clone her.” Regan paid $25,000 to have a cloning company take DNA from the original Deborah.
In a lab, they created embryos, implanted them. The result: Deborahs 1, 2, and 3. “Well, as far as I know, there’s no difference between, uh, a cloned cow and a bred cow.” The FDA says its decision comes after extensive study of some 600 clones. The agency examined their health and characteristics of their meat and milk. But those strongly opposed insist this is a new field, and there are still too many unknowns.
“We don’t think that data has really been looked at fully. We don’t think that data fully exists.” Opponents also want meat and milk from clones labeled as such, but the government says it won’t require that. It will take some time before this food ends up on the dinner table, but today at a popular Washington D.C. steakhouse, diners were decidedlyskittish.
Because of that reluctance, some big food companies we spoke with today, such as Hormel and Dean, say they won’t use cloned products. And farmers of organic products who have seen their sales boom also think cloning is the wrong way to go. Now the government still wants farmers to hold off on the sale of clones until it figures out a way to integrate them into the food supply. Charlie. All right.
