In Washington, the National Academy of Science has addressed an issue today, that has stirred debate here in Iowa and other states. The Academy released a report called “Science, Evolution, and Creationism,” and it declared that the evidence supporting evolution is both overwhelming and compelling.
And it further said creationism should not be taught in public schools. Here's ABC's Dan Harris. A planet that is hundreds of millions of years old, where dinosaurs roamed long before the arrival of humans, who evolved from apes. For the vast majority of scientists, these are not controversial assertions.
Not so for the 61% of Americans who believe the biblical story of creation, that God made all creatures in a matter of days. …Which is why the nation's leading scientists are putting out this book which calls evolution “the central organizing principle of modern biology.”
They say the evidence, already overwhelming, just keeps piling up, citingfossil discoveries like this one - a fish with four fin-like legs, possibly the link between sea and land creatures. This new book comes at a time when the teaching of evolution has been under attack in Kansas, Dover, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
-- We don't want to be in a position of misleading our…our youngsters about what science is and what it can tell us about how the world works. Disagreement today at the new CreationMuseum in Kentucky which we recently visited. -- You've got Adam living with a bunch of animals, including… right here, dinosaurs. -- Including dinosaurs, yes. Because all land animals were made on day six.
-- Why are the evolutionists so defensive? If their ideas are so compelling, I would think they would welcome a challenge. In fact, the new book also contains comments from clergy members who say faith and science can co-exist. One to explore nature, the other to explore the soul. Dan Harris, ABC News, New York.
