Lesson 40 - Absent Without Leave John: I’ll be AWOL for six months. Kathy: What? Is something wrong? Are you having family problems? John: on the contrary, my dear. I’m taking some time off for a long holiday around the world. Kathy: How exciting! Are you taking a leave of absence or is this paid vacation? John: A leave of absence, of course. No company would be that generous. Kathy: You’re quite the globetrotter, aren’t you? John: I’ve been counting the days for this trip since college. Kathy: How can you afford to take so much time off from work? John: I’m using up all my savings. I’ll be flat broke when I come back but it’ll be a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Kathy: Did you buy one of those around-the-world tickets? John: Absolutely. You won’t believe how much I saved on the airfare. Kathy: Looks like you’re all set to go. I’m so jealous. < Key expressions > ■ Are you taking a leave of absence or is this paid vacation? ■ How can you afford to take so much time off from work? ■ I’ll be flat broke when I come back but it’ll be a once-in-a-lifetime chance. ■ You won’t believe how much I saved on the airfare. < Main dialogue > ■ I’ll be AWOL for six months. * AWOL = absent without leave :휴가 중인 ■ on the contrary : 그와 반대로, 그렇기는커녕 ■ I’m taking some time off for a long holiday around the world. * take time off : 일이 없는[한가한] 시간, (활동의) 일시적 중단, 휴식 *《美》vacation / 《美》holiday ■ Are you taking a leave of absence or is this paid vacation? * a leave of absence : 휴직 * a paid vacation : 유급 휴가 * a maternity leave : 출산 휴가 / cf. paternity leave (남편의) 출산 휴가 * sick leave: 병가 * secondment : 《英》 (장교•공무원의) 임시 파견 ■ You’re quite the globetrotter, aren’t you? * globetrotter -> a person who really like traveling around world : 세계 각국을 여행하는 사람, 세계를 두루 돌아다니는 사람 ■ I’ve been counting the days for this trip since college. * counting the days -> 손 꼽아 기다리다. ■ How can you afford to take so much time off from work? -> How are you able to take the time from work? * How can you afford to do something? ■ I’ll be flat broke when I come back but it’ll be a once-in-a-lifetime chance. * to be flat broke -> 빈털터리가 되다, 파산되다 / skint :《英속어》 빈털터리의 * a once-in-a-lifetime chance : 평생에 단 한번의 ■ Did you buy one of those around-the-world tickets? * around-the-world tickets : 세계 일주 티켓 ■ You won’t believe how much I saved on the airfare. * you won’t believe ~ : ~을 믿을 수 없을 거야 ■ Looks like you’re all set to go.
