Meeting at Night

The gray sea and the long black land,
And the yellow half-moon large and low;
And the startled little waves that leap
In fiery ringlet from their sleep,
As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed I' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!
 
 

 

회색 빛 바다, 어두운 긴 대지
노오란 반달이 커다랗게 낮게 드리워져,
요동치는 작은 물결이
깨어 반짝이는 고수머리를 들어올린다.
뱃머리를 밀어 작은 만으로 들어갔을때
질척이는 모래가 뱃머리를 멈추네.

 

1마일의 바다냄새 해변과
농장까지 건너야 할 들판이 세 개
창문 두드림 소리, 날카로운 성냥 긋는 소리
파랗게 타오르는 성냥.
기쁨과 두려움에 속삭이는 소리보다
연인들의 심장소리 더욱 크구나.
