The Link Between Obesity and Cancer
인쇄하기
Good evening. It is a massive study on cancer and diet - actually, a compilation of 7,000 other studies. And the conclusion: that there is indeed a connection between obesity and six types of common cancers. The team of international researchers who conducted the study say[s] there are specific foods to avoid, specific steps to take to reduce your risk of cancer. Here’s ABC’s John Mckinsey.

In the war against cancer, never before has the evidence been more compelling, the advice more specific on how you can reduce your risk.
-- I think it’s very clear in this report that overweight and obesity cause more cancers than we thought just a few years ago.
Weight gain is now linked to all these cancers. The good news: losing weight reduces the risk of those cancers, and it doesn’t take much.

-- Even if you drop uh…ten pounds in weight, that drops the risk. And the suggestion is that in dropping that weight, you can drop the risk by 20 percent.
Even if you are already at a healthy weight, the report recommends at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity. Researchers say vigorous activity allows insulin in the body to work more effectively, reducing the likelihood that healthy cells become cancer cells.

The panel recommends: limit red meat consumption to just 18 ounces of beef, lamb, and pork a week.
-- Some of the carcinogens produced when we cook red meat, also the high amounts of iron in red meat stimulate the growth of colon cancer cells, which could, in the end, lead to cancer.

And the report says to avoid processed meats entirely: ham, bacon, and yes, hotdogs - foods that often contain chemical preservatives. For many Americans, that may be going too far. Researchers say if you do eat hotdogs or any meat more often than recommended, you may be able to minimize any damage if you are on a high-fiber diet. That means lots of whole grain cereals and breads, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

The researchers also suggest limiting salt and alcohol consumption to further reduce the cancer risks.
-- If you put all these recommendation[s] together, it’s the same uh…benefit we get as if we quit smoking.
A dramatic reduction in cancer risk from simple choices we make everyday. John Mckinsey, ABC News, New York.
