Shortage of Farm Workers

We’re going to start tonight with a story that has consequences for every kitchen in this country - a labor shortage on American farms. More than half of all farm workers are illegal immigrants, and farmers say the recent immigration crackdown is creating a crisis, one that could lead to higher food prices for everyone.

The Bush administration is now stepping in, but it is doing so quietly for fear of angering its conservative base. Our first report tonight is from ABC’s Neil Karlinsky who’s in Los Angeles. Across America: a warning from the nation’s farmers. They simply don’t have enough workers, leaving fruits stuck on the vine and fields left unharvested.
-- This is like a time bomb, um… just ready to go off.

The shortage is the result of an immigration crackdown -- raids and the threat to farmers that they will be held responsible for using illegal workers.
-- The reality is…is that we do have a sufficient number of workers here to do the work. They just need to be…feel that they are protected, that their families are protected, and that…in that particular way they’re going to continue working in agriculture.

Publicly, the White House has been serious about enforcement, giving little to the plight of farmers.
--  … We’re working hard to enforce the border, and we’re stepping up enforcement inside the country.
But officials now acknowledge there is a real shortage of farm workers, something they have quietly begun to address.

The job has fallen to the Department of Labor, which now says it will review the farm worker visa program. In a statement today the Department of Labor says, “We are now in the process of identifying ways the program can be improved to provide farmers with an orderly and timely flow of legal workers.
But it will not happen in time for this season, so many states have now taken the issue into their own hands.
-- “We want you to know why it’s worth making the long trip to Washington.”

The state of Washington produced this commercial aimed at luring the dwindling supply of farm workers away from other states, promising higher wages and a better lifestyle. Farmers say it’s gotten so bad that some could be forced out of business. And what happens on the farm is expected to trickle down, leading to higher food prices for everyone.
