People check food labels for calories, fat content, healthyingredients. But do you have any idea how much the food products you buy contribute to global warming? On the face of it, that’s a sort of bizarre connection, but some British companies are beginning an experiment linking food to the environment. ABC’s Jim Sciutto, in London, explains.
We know all this contributes to global warming, but do you know the environmental impact of a bag of potato chips? British consumers do. It’s listed on every bag, right next to the calories and fat. That’s 75 grams of carbonemissionsto be exact, taking into account growing the potatoes, cooking them, transporting them, even disposingof the bag.
-- Is 75 grams a lot of carbon? -- We don’t know if 75 grams is a lot. We’re…we’re pioneering. The idea, backed by the British government, is to give consumers choices between, say, the chips and this mango smoothie, which has less fat but contributes four times the carbon - mostly because all the mangoes are shipped in from thousands of miles away.
The idea behind carbon labeling is to remind people that they leave a carbon footprint wherever they go, whatever they do, right up to virtually everything they consume inside their homes. In Britain, food production and consumption adds a third of a ton of carbon to the atmosphere per household per year. Recreation, such as driving to a soccer game contributes a ton. Home heating and electricity add another two tons. The average American household contributes twice as much.
Shoppers we spoke with liked the idea of labeling. -- Yeah, I think everybody’s got to think about it. We’ve got to change. Still, some environmental activists say labeling is simply a way of shifting responsibility from businesses to consumers and delaying the even harder choices ahead. -- It’s not a question of consuming product A over product B. It’s a question of consuming a whole lot less.
That one bag of chips amountsto one-thousandth of one percent of the carbon the average person produces in a year - something to think about. And perhaps that’s the point of labeling: thinking about what we consume and the consequences. Jim Sciutto, ABC News, London.
